STATEMENT FROM CAMPAIGN TO CLOSE RIKERS ON MAYOR MAMDANI’S APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY MAYOR FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY

As Mayor Mamdani announced his appointment of Renita Francois to the position of Deputy Mayor for Community Safety, the Campaign to Close Rikers issued the following statement:

“We are grateful to see Mayor Mamdani taking steps to deliver on one of his key promises to New Yorkers – a more effective approach to community safety and crisis response. By investing in the well-being of communities, both through the Office of Community Safety and through other agencies like the Department of Health and the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, we can foster the true safety that police, courts, and Rikers could never provide. We look forward to partnering with the administration to strengthen communities and reduce incarceration, as we work to fulfill the legal and moral obligation to Close Rikers.”
